Managing Electricity since 1990

Clean Power Lab founder Mike Watson has been helping deliver carbon-free electricity since 1990 through his work at Nuclear Electric and as owner of Pager Power which helps developers with planning permission for wind and solar farms

Businesses can halve their Scope 2 emissions by reducing the Carbon Intensity of the electricity they consume by choosing when and where to consume electricity. Mike has established cloud-based analysis and control systems to help businesses achieve this practically.

Meet Founder
Mike Watson

Mike enjoys solving customers’ technical problems through processing and understanding data.

From 1990 Mike was a Nuclear Power station commissioning engineer responsible for electrical, control and telecommunications systems.

In 1995 he developed a system for controlling generators and electrical loads using the national radio-paging network.

Mike founded Pager Power Limited in 1997. The company has fourteen employees who help wind and solar developers obtain planning permission.

In 2021 he started to analyse Carbon Intensity data and developed processes and systems for minimising the Carbon Intensity of electricity. Clean Power Lab Limited was registered in April 2022.  Mike is based in Suffolk.

Meet Co-Founder
Adam Knights

Adam specialises in architecting and developing complex software systems that sit in highly scalable cloud technologies.

In 2008 he joined Pager Power Limited where he worked with founder Mike. While there Adam successfully completed software initiatives to aid solar and wind developers in moving their projects forward.

Adam’s work on server-less cloud technologies at companies such as Dyson has led to massive efficiency gains,  saving both cost and carbon footprint of utilised software.

In 2023 he joined Clean Power Lab in order to develop software and algorithms to help minimise carbon footprints. Adam is based in Somerset.

Our ethos and values

Our mission is to help large businesses cut GHG emissions caused by using electricity. Our focus is on reducing carbon-dioxide emissions rather than making energy cheaper.

Our values are:

  • Technical Innovation
Developing new ways of analysing and processing Carbon Intensity data.
  • Professionalism
Working with business customers to deliver sustainable reductions in GHG emissions whilst continuing to operate effectively.

  • Simplicity
Changing business operations to accommodate varying Carbon Intensity can be challenging. Simplicity helps turn the theoretically possible into practically achievable.

Frequently asked questions

Our electricity supply is 100% renewable. Does this mean I don’t need to think about any of this?2023-01-10T10:04:26+00:00

It is sometimes, incorrectly, thought that electricity supplied under a renewable electricity contract does not cause GHG emissions. Emissions actually depend on the physical connection of electricity generators and consumers – rather than the electricity supply contract. This explains why electricity is supplied via renewable electricity contracts even when there is no renewable generation. Businesses cannot claim zero emissions just because they have a renewable electricity contract.

We are already minimising our electricity use. How can Clean Power Lab help us?2023-01-10T10:04:58+00:00

Businesses can halve their Scope 2 emissions by reducing the Carbon Intensity of the electricity they consume. This can be achieved by choosing when and where to consume electricity.

We need electricity to run our business effectively. We can’t just stop using it at peak times. What can Clean Power Lab do for us?2023-01-10T10:05:31+00:00

Reducing the Carbon Intensity of some electricity is achievable in practice. Reducing the Carbon Intensity of all electricity consumed is not normally practical. Getting the best reductions in GHG emissions whilst continuing to operate effectively is achievable.

We can’t just move operations from high Carbon Intensity regions to low Carbon Intensity regions. How can we reduce our GHG emissions in practice?2023-01-10T10:06:37+00:00

Knowing where Carbon Intensity is likely to be highest can increase the effectiveness of investments in reducing GHG emissions. For example the best region to install a Solar PV system is one, such as East Midlands, where Carbon Intensity is high. The best region to replace petrol vehicles with EVs is one with low Carbon Intensity (e.g. North of Scotland).
